UNITED ARAB EMIRATES – Global marine terminal operator DP World has launched ‘DP World in the Community’, a Corporate Responsibility programme that gives its Dubai Head Office employees time off work away from their normal UAE container shipping duties to get involved in voluntary community activities beyond the world of freight and logistics. Kathryn Wightman-Beaven, Director - Global Corporate Responsibility, DP World, said:

“We launched the ‘DP World in the Community’ programme in response to our employees’ eagerness to get involved in community work. DP World believes it is important to support and nurture such passion and commitment to do something beyond the workplace. The response we received to our first engagement is extremely encouraging and we hope to do much more in the future.”

Participants have the opportunity to initially spend one working day each year contributing their time, knowledge and skills towards a social cause in a practical and tangible way. Marking the launch of the programme, a group of eleven DP World employees spent a day at the Dubai Centre for Special Needs supporting teachers in classroom activities, such as helping students of various ages with writing, arts and crafts, and putting puzzles together. The volunteers were also involved in a pottery making workshop, learning sign language and a cooking class. Mohammed Sharaf, Group Chief Executive Officer, DP World, said:

“DP World plays a significant role in the communities in which we operate and we strongly believe that it is our responsibility to contribute to their long term sustainability. We encourage our employees to engage with the community and actively make a difference. Volunteer work in such programmes enriches the quality of life of both volunteers and the people they help.”
