US Show How To Reduce Cargo Tank Truck Accidents

New Video Advice for Tanker Drivers

US – There are few types of road accident as spectacular, or potentially as dangerous, than the ‘rollover’ of a road tanker. The vehicles, which carry fluids as benign as milk and as lethal as petrol, are inherently unstable if mishandled by a driver and US authorities have been giving their full attention to a problem which is ten times more likely to be the drivers fault than through any other factors.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), in association with the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) the National Tank Truck Carriers (NTTC) and the American Trucking Associations (ATA) have now produced a video which should be essential viewing for any tanker driver, no matter where in the world they are based.

The video, produced in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Transportation, features several experienced tank truck drivers educating other drivers about the contributing factors of rollovers and steps drivers can take to prevent future incidents. Research shows that driver action plays a role in the majority of rollovers, so properly educating drivers has the potential to reduce the occurrence of those incidents.

The FMCSA are keen for fleet safety managers to use this video to supplement their driver training programs, as this information offers preventive measures that cargo tank motor vehicle drivers can take to help avoid a rollover crash. The training video covers four approaches to reducing cargo tank truck rollovers: vehicle design and performance, load effects, highway factors and driver factors.

“Although rollovers are rare, we recognize that they can be serious,” said NTTC President John Conley. “This outreach video is part of our proactive commitment to work with the government or anyone else in improving truck safety and minimizing the risk of such incidents.” This video is the latest in a series of actions NTTC has taken to improve safety in the tank truck sector of the industry. For more than three years, NTTC has convened rollover prevention summits and reached out to drivers with posters and other publicity in an effort to raise safety awareness.

The ATA of course are at the forefront of safety promotion within the freight trucking industry. “We were pleased to have the opportunity to work so closely with the government safety community, and are proud of the important driver training video that resulted from this successful collaboration,” said ATA President and CEO Bill Graves.
