UK Management Software Moves Beyond Freight Container Shipping to Bulk Road Haulage

Fargo's TOPS System Extended to Include Tankers and Waste Transport
Shipping News Feature

UK – Having announced last month the addition of a rail freight transport element to its TOPS multi modal shipping management software, Fargo Systems, based in Exeter and Colchester, has now developed specific additional enhancements and extended features on the 3.8 edition to assist the tanker, bulk and waste management sectors. Fargo says its program is already the de facto standard for the UK container transport market with operators controlling over 3 million box movements annually and it has been working with road haulage operators to develop a range of tailored and flexible functions to enable the latest additions.

Recent enhancements include a simplified order entry system that automatically breaks large orders down into multiple journeys for scheduling based on work category rules and vehicle limitations. A significant factor is the ability of the telematics solution to not only provide transport instructions to drivers, but for them to be able to update the back-office system automatically with actual weights and quantities. Development Director at Fargo Systems, Kevin Terrill, said:

“It is crucial that the transport planner has full visibility of every movement required to carry out much larger orders, which perhaps span several weeks and tens of journeys and vehicles. All the while the customer may only be interested in being billed for the one instruction given. It’s all about managing requested amounts and reconciling these with minimum quantities, actual checked and chargeable values.”

All different vehicle types are fully catered for and in particular tanker pot configurations and capacities are clearly definable, whether these are by weight, volume or quantity. An important aspect to waste management is that in many cases it may be hazardous and this is also true of many liquified tanker operations. TOPS now also includes the abilty for full hazardous goods classifications to be stored and quickly retrieved by the system as well as allowing other CDG/ADR qualification checks as required. Peter Larner, Managing Director of petroleum tanker haulage specialists, Suckling Transport, commented:

“The flexibility of TOPS helps streamline our traffic office procedures and makes our operators’ jobs a lot easier. The excellent support Fargo Systems provides gives our senior management the peace of mind we need from a provider of critical services.”
