UK – WORLDWIDE – Unfortunately the ever present threats to the freight industry of crime, terrorism and piracy meant that this years Transport Security Expo was always destined to be a record breaking event. The London Olympia based exhibition and conference was supported by the Handy Shipping Guide and concluded recently having seen thousands of attendees pass through its doors. This year the deeply troubling issue of cyber security took centre stage. In recent times this has become a major issue for regulators given that cyberspace has become a veritable playground for state actors and criminal gangs intent on inflicting physical and financial harm. Therefore the transport world is reassessing security protocols and beefing up protective measures where appropriate.
The annual event, which brings governmental, law enforcement, security service and industry leaders together to debate issues and develop solutions, saw in excess of a hundred exhibitors display hardware and software to the crowds and Peter Jones the Chief Executive of organisers Nineteen Events, commented:
“Transport Security Expo has long held a reputation as the go to event for professionals within the aviation, maritime, supply chain and public transportation industries. In our eleventh consecutive year we are delighted that it retains continued relevance in governmental and industry circles as we continue to fight the menace of global terrorism.”
Potentially significant change is afoot in how the European aviation goes about ensuring security at the point of delivery and with new rules on the vexed issue of liquids about to come into force more airports than ever were prompted to attend the event. Plans for next December’s event are already taking shape and the larger National Hall in Olympia is destined to be the venue for 2-3 December 2014. All conferences and the exhibition, workshops and VIP programme will take place on one floor and, as we say unfortunately, the threats to the industry mean that next year’s event will prove an even bigger success for organisers and exhibitors alike.
