AUSTRIA – The country’s oldest established freight forwarding and logistics outfit, Gebrüder Weiss has broken ground at a ceremony celebrating the start of construction of the firm’s new headquarters in Lauterach, which is expected to be completed in 2014. The company has invested around €28 million in the project and Gebrüder Weiss Management Board Member Wolfram Senger-Weiss was enthusiastic when speaking about the project, saying:

“Expanding our capacity is a crucial step towards a sustainable future of our global headquarters in Vorarlberg and at the same time it shows our commitment to regional economy. The building’s appearance will also serve to emphasize the appeal of Gebrüder Weiss as one of the largest employers in the region”

The new headquarters, together with the existing building which will continue to serve as the Lauterach branch, doubles up on office space with all corporate divisions being housed in the new build. By expanding the headquarters, the company estimated around 100 new jobs will be created in the long term.

The construction plans also include a comprehensive renovation and restructuring of the area located on the federal highway in Lauterach. In the northern area of the site, a new, state-of-the-art logistics warehouse will be built with over 5,000 square metres of logistics space and 13,000 pallet positions. In addition, the south-facing transhipment warehouse will be completely renovated as part of the project: an extra 1,000 square metres and 13 docking gates will be added.

The entire traffic flow will be reorganised: after the renovation, the area will have three connections to the public road. The low night-time truck traffic will be handled by the traffic light-controlled crossing in the southern area. In order to reduce noise levels and relieve residents living close by, a noise barrier is constructed. In order to ensure continuity of operations, the construction will be done in stages.

The building has been designed by the architect duo Cukrowicz Nachbaur in accordance with strict ergonomic and ecological guidelines. The architectural idea behind the new headquarters is ‘non-hierarchical communication’, an open construction with potential for further development. The Bregenz-based architect duo designed a square structure made of concrete and wood, featuring two completely glazed office floors.
