Small Commercial Vehicles Remain Vital Factor in Delivery of Freight and Logistics in the UK

White Van Man Continues to Rule!

UK – The importance of small commercial vehicles to the logistics industry has been emphasised this week with the release of figures which demonstrate that the mythical ‘white van man’ remains the predominant factor in ensuring Britain’s ever more demanding consumers receive their goods on time. Freight deliveries by van account for an astonishing 45 billion miles across the UK each year according to data from Motorparc, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) guide.

The study, released as the 2016 CV Show got underway in Birmingham this week, show the number of vans on the country’s road is at its highest level ever with 4,007,331 of the vehicles meaning a 4.3% increase on the previous year. With more people shopping on line the number of home deliveries has doubtless had a significant effect on the numbers.

As the number of vehicles has risen so has the demand for new vans with demand in the UK at record levels, registrations grew 1.2% in the first quarter of 2016, following a bumper 2015 which saw more than 370,000 units registered. The importance of these vehicles has been recognised by the likes of the Freight Transport Association (FTA) with its Van Excellence programme, an industry-led scheme launched in 2010 to represent the van sector, share good practice and help operators demonstrate high standards.

The scheme has more than 100 members and a Small Fleet Programme has just been launched for operators with 10 or fewer vans and Mark Cartwright, FTA's Head of Vans, said:

”This [increase in van numbers] further demonstrates the continued growth of vans and their importance to the UK economy in supporting online and entrepreneurial activity. However, with great power comes great responsibility, and it is incumbent on operators of all sizes and sectors to ensure that they operate their vehicles in a safe, compliant and efficient manner. FTA's Van Excellence programme exists to help operators achieve this goal."
