AUSTRIA – Unifeeder, best known for its short-sea container services, and which now forms part of the DP World Group, has opened a new freight depot in Vienna, as the logistics company looks to expand its multimodal activities in Austria, and to facilitate growth in the region, ensuring a constant availability of 45 foot pallet wide containers for the local exporters.

The location of the new site was chosen for Vienna’s accessibility to the highway and rail connections. Part of Unifeeder’s strategy is to provide a price-competitive, multimodal alternative to the simple road haulage option for customers whilst ensuring a steady supply chain from Austria to the rest of Europe.

Benefiting from the constant availability of short-sea equipment in Austria, as well as large scale operations, Unifeeder says that it can help customers cope with last-minute orders, changes or delays by adding or rerouting cargo when needed. Unifeeder claims an extensive intermodal, continental wide network, and says it aims to simplify the complex tasks of choosing and managing supply chains, enabling its customers to deliver their products to markets throughout Europe.

Used correctly multimodal transport can be more cost effective than carriage by trailer and can be closely coordinated with customers to secure just-in-time loading and delivery. Use of 45 foot containers offers the possibility of an easier transfer of cargo between truck and more sustainable transport modes like rail and seaborne transport.
