PHILIPPINES – Saturday 26th June is the date for a ‘Party in the Park’ to be held in Luneta Park, Manila which has been organised by the International Committee on Seafarers’ Welfare (ICSW). The event starts at 9am and will go on until 2pm. The event is already attracting widespread interest and support from a range of organisations in the maritime industry, both in the Philippines and internationally. Shipping groups sponsoring the day, which unites vessel owners and managers with unions and welfare organisations, include BW Shipping, Costa Cruises, Marlow Maritime, Tee Kay Shipping, and Wallem Ship Management.
The event follows on from an Expo put on by the International Transport Workers Federation (ITF) being held between the 23rd and 25th June and is supported by the ITF, the International Maritime Organisation (IMO), the International Labour Organization (ILO), International Shipping Federation (ISF) and the International Christian Maritime Association (ICMA) and will include a display by maritime cadets, cultural performances by seafarers’ wives and games for children and all Filipino seafarers and their families are invited.
Seafaring has traditionally formed the backbone of the Philippine economy with ships crews employed on international fleets wiring home well over $3 billion in wages annually, around 10% of all overseas income into the islands.
