UK - Sadiq Khan, MP for Tooting, has been promoted to Minister of State for Transport in the Government reshuffle. This follows on from the appointment of Lord Adonis as Transport Secretary after he replaced Geoff Hoon who quit following the ongoing expenses furore.
Mr Khan announced his appointment on his website after receiving a telephone call from the Prime Minister last Saturday night. Mr Khan can now claim to be the most senior Muslim politician in the country after his move from his role as under-secretary of state in the Department for Communities and Local Government.
Mr Khan, the son of a bus driver, stated that he was privileged and honoured by his appointment and commented "It would have made my father so proud."
Mr Khan will now attend Cabinet meetings for discussions of transport policy and becomes lead speaker in the House of Commons on transport matters.
