Sad News Starts the Week's Shipping, Freight and Logistics Appointments and Departures

NORWAY – The freight and logistics sector lost another stalwart last week with the news that Norwegian shipping veteran and former ship owner Andreas Kjell Lund Ugland, passed away on April 18 at the age of 93. Born on December 30, 1925, Andreas Ugland was the son of ship owner Johan Milmar Ugland, who first established the family company, Ugland Rederi, in 1930. Upon his father’s death in 1960, Andreas along with his brother Johan Jørgen Ugland assumed control of the company.

During his career, Andreas Ugland sat on the board of Det Norske Veritas (DNV), Lloyd's of London and the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS). He was also Vice President of the Norwegian Shipowners' Association, and President of Intertanko.

UK – Returns management platform ReBOUND has appointed ecommerce supply chain veteran Colin Griffin Executive Vice President. He joins ReBOUND from Fanatics where he was Global Supply Chain & Operations Director. Before this, Colin was Group Supply Chain Director for Boohoo.

UK – Walker Logistics has announced the appointment of Simon Lapham as Head of Operations. In this new role, Lapham will be responsible for overseeing all administrative and operational processes at Walker’s 200,000 square foot multi user storage facility in Berkshire.

US – Emir Pineda, Trade & Logistics Manager for the Marketing Division of the Miami-Dade Aviation Department, which operates Miami International Airport (MIA), has been elected to the Board of The International Air Cargo Association (TIACA).

US – Norfolk Southern has announced Thomas Schnautz and Edward Boyle Jr., to new positions of responsibility as part of a restructuring of the railroad's Engineering Department. Effective May 1, Schnautz is Vice President of Advanced Train Control, a newly created position, and Boyle becomes Vice President of Engineering, to replace Phil Merilli upon his retirement from the company. Both will report to Chief Operating Officer Michael Wheeler.

US – Freight forwarder Flexport has announced the appointments of Dr Mehmet Gӧker as Chief Data Officer (CDO) and Kevin Paige as Chief Information Security Officer (CISO). Gӧker previously worked as Vice President of Data Analytics at SurveyMonkey and VP of Business Data Science at Salesforce.com. Paige most recently served as CISO at Mulesoft through its acquisition by Salesforce.com.

US – The American Waterways Operators, the national tugboat, towboat and barge industry association, has elected a new slate of leaders. Scott Merritt, former Chief Operating Officer for Foss Maritime Company, was elected Chairman. Arthur Mead, Vice President and General Counsel at Crowley Maritime, was elected Vice Chairman. Merritt succeeds outgoing Chairman Tom Marian, General Counsel at Buffalo Marine Service.

US – PINC has announced the appointment of Eric Breen as its new Vice President of Business Development, reporting directly to CEO Matt Yearling.
