Russian Rail Freight Looks Optimistic

Tonnage figures start to lift
Shipping News Feature

RUSSIA - Russian Railways (RZD) has reported that its rail freight division has suffered a 12.3 percent decrease on tonnage carried in August when compared to the same month last year.

Though the drop is bad it is in fact up from July where a 13% decrease was recorded and is being viewed as a positive step, indicating that for Russia the recession may be starting to lift.

With much of Russian production moving by rail freight, RZD’s figures are generally considered a good gauge for the rest of the national economy.
