UK – The unfortunate death of a young man in Scotland last week has caused local police to ask for information via the services of the Road Haulage Association. On Monday 25th September the body of Robert Finlayson aged 22 was found in the centre of the B7078 Carlisle Road ½ mile north of the Draffan Road Blackwood. If you, your drivers or one of your vehicles was on the B7078 between 04:00 and 04:45 on Monday the 25th September 2013, the Road Policing Unit and Motherwell Police Office would like to speak to you. A statement from Inspector Calum Maider of the Divisional Road Policing Unit at Motherwell, says:

“We have now confirmed that Mr Finlayson left a friend’s home in Lesmahagow around 0310 hours on Monday morning and intended to walk home, was seen standing on the north side of the over bridge of the M74 motorway Junction 10 at 0410 hours. He was wearing a black coloured tracksuit top and bottoms and carrying a black rucksack. Mr Finlayson then began to walk north on the northbound carriageway of the B7078 and was seen facing northbound vehicles whilst attempting to hitchhike.

“Several northbound vehicles have observed Mr Finlayson and have moved onto the opposing lane to pass him safely. He has then been struck by a vehicle and carried underneath it for a distance of 3 miles. Evidence at the point of collision and from CCTV suggests that one of the vehicles of interest is an unmarked light coloured Mercedes Actros tractor unit towing a tri axle rigid step framed trailer.

“This is a tragic incident which has resulted in the death of a young man in unknown circumstances, extensive enquires have revealed that more than 40 vehicles were diverted off the motorway and onto the B7078 between 0400 and 0430 and it is imperative that we identify these drivers.

“I must make it clear that at this point I am not looking to identify a suspect or an accused and I consider all of the drivers who were on this route as potential witnesses. I urge anyone who was driving on this route and who has relevant information to contact Police Scotland on the telephoning 101 and leave a message or call the Roads Policing Unit Motherwell on 01698 483 045 or 043.

“It is essential that we can confirm the circumstances which led to the death of Mr Finlayson not only to progress the enquiry but more importantly to offer comfort to the family. Roberts’s parents, Angela and Graham state ‘we would appeal to anyone who saw Robbie or knows anything about the accident to come forward to the police'. They would also like to pass their sincere thanks to the person who found their son and contacted the police.”
