UK – Yet again freight forwarding outfit Davies Turner has stepped up with an offer of work to a group of young apprentices, and this year managed to include a record intake with 13 graduate and A-Level apprentices in the sixth annual intake since it started its national apprenticeship and trainee programme in 2010. In line with the approach taken for the first five groups, the new intake will all be recruited on a two-year fixed term contract, with the opportunity of a permanent role with the logistics company upon completion of a successful training period.

In what has proved to be a common sense approach, all will be based at the main Davies Turner hubs and branches throughout the UK, and will undertake an 18 month long training period, followed by a BIFA-accredited in-house multimodal course. They will have the opportunity to be trained in all Davies Turner’s different departments, before agreeing with their managers and mentors which department or section best suits both the company, and the trainee, in the longer term.

Altogether the nationwide programme lasts two years, and participants spend time in all Davies Turner’s overland and ocean departments, together with its logistics divisions, as well as getting an overview of IT, transport & warehouse, sales and the credit control departments, as well as Davies Turner Air Cargo, which has also taken on trainees of its own. Group Chairman Philip Stephenson explained further:

“As ever, the quality and commitment of the youngsters are impressive. So are their keenness and willingness to learn about the industry. I am sure they will enjoy their time learning these valuable skills and will be enabled to play an important role in the company going forward. Being part of a wide ranging multimodal freight and logistics company, the Davies Turner apprenticeship provides a comprehensive grounding in key aspects of forwarding and international trade.

“I hope that we will be setting a few more people off on a long and rewarding career in our industry. Many of our previous trainees have already moved into responsible roles in the company and are a credit both to themselves and the quality of our apprenticeship programme. We place equal emphasis on training our existing staff and look on all this as a vital investment for the future.”
