USA – Rail freight and multi-modal operator CSX Transportation has been honoured with the award of the Employer Support Freedom Award. Given to fifteen recipients this year, The Freedom Award is the Department of Defense’s (DoD) highest recognition given to employers for exceptional support of their employees serving in the U.S. National Guard and Reserves.

In a statement the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), a Department of Defense agency, said that: “CSX Transportation stood out among a field of 4,049 nominations submitted by Guard and Reserve service members or their families.”

CSX Transportation was nominated by one of their employee’s serving in the Army National Guard. The nominator pointed out that CSX, already a recipient of the Freedom Award in 1998 and the first company to have been honoured twice, continues their strong tradition of supporting veterans, with 22 percent of the current workforce comprised of veterans or active Guard and Reserve members.

The company also helped wounded veterans find new careers while also participating in 245 job fairs targeting service members in 2010 alone.

"To stand out among the many thousands of employers who firmly support our Citizen Warriors is a testament to the remarkable efforts of these 15 recipients," said Dennis McCarthy, Assistant Secretary of Defense for Reserve Affairs. "On behalf of the Department of Defense, I congratulate the 2011 honorees and thank them for serving as outstanding partners in our nation's defense."

"We are proud to be a major employer of America's servicemen and women, whose superior training, experience in logistics and ability to work safely in demanding, team-based environments makes them uniquely qualified for railroading. We thank the members of our Guard and Reserves for volunteering to protect our country and its citizens, and as their employer, we remain committed to supporting them," said Michael J. Ward, chairman, president, and chief executive officer, CSX.

The 2011 honorees will be recognized in Washington, D.C. at the 16th annual Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award Ceremony on September 22, 2011.
