DENMARK – WORLDWIDE – Freight and logistics group DSV Panalpina has become the latest company to join hundreds of others from a wide range of professions in signing up to Science Based Targets (SBT), an organisation which sets goals for businesses to achieve a lowering of their greenhouse gas emissions to below the levels set in the 2015 Paris Agreement.

The Paris agreement saw 195 of the world’s governments commit to prevent dangerous climate change by limiting global warming to well below 2 degrees Celsius and the campaigning organisation would like those who pledge to reduce their pollution to pursue efforts to limit warming to 1.5°C.

DSV says its specific targets will be announced in the first quarter of 2020 and that those as fixed by SBT will specify how much and how quickly DSV Panalpina needs to reduce emissions and serve as a baseline for the Group’s future efforts within sustainability, both for the company’s direct emissions, scope 1 and 2, and for its indirect scope 3 emissions, which include subcontracted transports.

With its commitment from 2015 Panalpina was among the first companies in the transport and logistics industry to have approved targets in place, DSV states that the fact it is a transport company committed to driving down its own scope 3 emissions has an impact for its customers who benefit in that their own pollution levels will drop proportionately, as well as being good for the bottom line as Lindsay Zingg, Director, Sustainability, Group CSR points out:

“We can drive cost effectiveness by reducing energy cost [and] we are really combining the best of both worlds with our new sustainability organisation. We are continuing initiatives from both companies, and we have a very good team in place to facilitate all the initiatives that will be part of DSV Panalpina reaching the targets. It’s a very good foundation for driving the company forward.”

Now that DSV and Panalpina have completed their amalgamation, the combined company is re-committing to the initiative and will be setting new targets that reflect the size of the new organisation. To achieve the targets and DSV Panalpina’s ambitious agenda for the area, that stronger sustainability team with eight dedicated resources has seen the light of day, bringing together staff from both Panalpina and DSV. The new team has committed to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) reforms and Jesper Petersen, Senior Director, Group CSR explains the latest move by the group thus:

“Setting science-based targets adds real meaning to reducing emissions and goes beyond good intentions. This commitment establishes something scientific to measure our progress against. Once our targets are set and approved, every company and employee of the Group will have to contribute to achieving them. We will have to start working in new ways and think innovatively in our collaboration with our business partners.”
