SPAIN – The APM Terminals facility in the Port of Barcelona broke its own record this week by registering 5,394 container movements on the 13,900 TEU box vessel Millau Bridge. This total surpasses the 5,323 movements recorded at the Catalan terminal on the arrival of the OOCL Brussels in 2017.
The Panamanian registered, Millau Bridge is operating as part of The Alliance service, APM Barcelona’s main customer. The terminal claims it is now performing at full capacity and with maximum levels of productivity thanks to the implementation of 100% of the investments made in recent months, which stood at €47 million and which were decisive for handling this latest record call.
Those investments include the acquisition of two Super Post Panamax cranes from Los Angeles, which means the terminal's equipment boasts five operational SPX cranes, 29 new straddle carriers (SC) and a new Rack for reefer connections. APM Terminals says this is part of its strategy to modernise its current fleet and increase its equipment's capacity and productivity, as well as to improve safety at the terminal. Narcís Pavón, Managing Director of APM Terminals Barcelona, commented:
"Over the past few months, we've made a big effort to improve the technical equipment and machinery necessary to operate the most modern container ships calling at Barcelona. Fortunately, we're already seeing positive results and are confident that this record will be the first of many more to come."
APM Terminals now operates a global network of 76 port terminals and 117 land service operations in 58 countries around the world and says the recently implemented investments reinforce the position of APM Terminals Barcelona as having one of the best productivity levels in the Mediterranean with the newest equipment. Jordi Vidal, Operations Manager at APM Terminals Barcelona, is justifiably proud of the results achieved, saying:
"The APM Terminals Barcelona operational team has done an excellent job in the face of this new challenge, providing our clients with excellent results, both in terms of operational planning and in productivity achieved."
