New Intra Asia Container Freight Feeder Service Commences

MYANMAR – ASIA – A milestone this week for the Myanmar International Terminals Thilawa (MITT) with the arrival of the MV Frisia Alster, a vessel of Singapore based MCC Transport and the first container feeder for the company deployed between China and Myanmar as the ASEAN/Chinese freight trade develops. This new weekly service is deployed on the Intra-Asia 5 (IA5) loop with a port rotation of Shanghai-Ningbo-Yangon.

MITT, a subsidiary of Hutchison Port Holdings Limited (HPH) is Myanmar’s first purpose-built international container terminal a mere 25 kilometres from Yangon, Burma’s largest city. It has one kilometre of berth in total with a depth to 9 metres capable of taking box ships up to 2,000 TEU, and is backed by 75 hectares of yard space. Currently equipped with 2 quay and 2 mobile harbour cranes it also has a fleet of 80 trucks and warehousing. There are rail links with Yangon and the national rail network and a container barge service between MITT and Shwe Pyi Tha Industrial Zone. Commenting on the new service, Mr. Min Kyi, General Manager of MITT said:

“This service underlines the fact that MITT has now started to attract both shipping lines and shippers in terms of capability and location. We provide swift and efficient services and are strategically located in close proximity to industrial zones in the northern and eastern parts of Yangon City as well as the increasing number of factories being built in the Thilawa Special Economic Zone (SEZ) just across from the terminal.”
