BULGARIA – AUSTRIA – Freight forwarding and logistics specialist Gebrüder Weiss, headquartered in Lauterach, Austria, has taken the first steps to moving its former site in Sofia, Bulgaria to a new, modern distribution centre in Elin Pelin, at a projected cost of €8 million. A recent ground breaking ceremony saw a variety of employees witness the initial moves which will culminate in the development of a new transport hub for the Balkans and Central Asia by the end of 2014.

Within the next couple of months, a modern logistics centre with six thousand square metres of logistics warehousing, supported by equivalent handling areas and office space, will be constructed at the site which covers a total area of approximately fifty seven thousand square metres. Thomas Moser, Regional Manager South-East/CIS for Gebrüder Weiss, and shown at the centre of our photograph, commented:

“In addition to an ideal infrastructure, the new distribution centre in Elin Pelin offers above all more space for the logistics business and the transhipment towards the Balkans and Central Asia. Its role will be to drive forward the current growth in these regions. Moreover, the centre will be an important interface for the most recent branches in Turkey and Georgia.”

The layout of the new premises is such so as to allow for further growth in the coming years whilst the staff headcount will be increased from the current 60 to 90 employees once the new construction is completed. The investment volume for the new facility is roughly 8 million euros. Marieta Grigorova, Country Manager for Gebrüder Weiss Bulgaria, concluded:

“At our modern distribution centre, the entire service portfolio of Gebrüder Weiss will be offered – ranging from land transports and air and sea freight to individual logistics solutions. Here, all services will be implemented with the usual high quality standards of Gebrüder Weiss.”
