MOROCCO – Mention Morocco to the average person and it will doubtless conjure up a vision of Casablanca, tagines and bustling souks, but the country is fast becoming one of the most important transhipment locations in the world, with around two hundred cargo vessels passing through the Strait of Gibraltar daily on major liner services linking Asia, Europe, the Americas and Africa.

Such strategic importance never goes unnoticed by the major shipping groups and last week saw the inauguration of APM Terminals second major facility in the country with the addition of APM Terminals MedPort Tangier, a state of the art facility with a capacity of five million TEUs in a port setting which is already ranked leading African port, with TangerMed Port ranked amongst the world’s top fifty container ports worldwide, given its prime location along key trade lanes and the increasing cargo flow to and from Africa.

The new facility will boost TangerMed Port, more than doubling its potential annual throughput capacity to nine million TEUs in a country which has recently seen GDP growth of 4.1% with widespread predictions for containerised imports and exports to see significant tonnage growth in the years to come, particularly for transhipment trade.

The new transhipment terminal was designed, constructed and operated by APM Terminals, and will join the hub facilities servicing container giant Maersk and its partners. Built utilising the latest technology, the operators say the terminal is set to be one of the most efficient and safe in the world.

The construction of APM Terminals MedPort Tangier took two years and a total investment of $800 million. With a quay length of 1200 metres and a depth of 16 to 18 metres APM Terminals MedPort Tangier is able to handle the largest vessels. Morten H. Engelstoft, Chief Executive Officer of APM Terminals commented:

“APM Terminals has a long-term relationship with Morocco and we are proud to be operating the second container terminal in the Tanger-Med port complex. APM Terminals MedPort Tangier is a key junction in our global network allowing us to serve our customers better and further facilitate global trade.”
