INDONESIA – Along with its fellow ASEAN states, development of the infrastructure necessary to promote trade via logistics in the country is advancing at a rapid pace and this week has seen a major event in ocean freight connections with the formal inauguration by the President of Indonesia and a group of other distinguished officials, of the Lamong Bay Container Terminal in Surabaya, East Java. The development represents an important milestone in the country’s transport development program that is improving the movement of goods through its vast waterways.

Port handling equipment at Lamong Bay’s automated container handling system was provided by Konecranes and consists of 20 Automated Stacking Cranes (ASCs), Remote Operating Stations (ROSs), and associated container yard infrastructure. Konecranes also provided 10 Ship-to-Shore (STS) cranes and 5 straddle carriers. The newly inaugurated Lamong Bay Terminal is the jewel in the crown of Indonesian state-owned terminal operator PT Pelabuhan Indonesia III (Pelindo III) and the facility’s automated container handling system incorporates a host of technological improvements including an improved remote operations and a Graphical User Interface (GUI).

Konecranes’ unique Active Load Control technology is now extended utilising an advanced machine vision system which detects containers and container profiles with great precision. As the container approaches the target, the container profile becomes more accurate and the effects of dust, fog etc. are minimised. The system senses neighbouring container stacks from the point of view of the load, and performs 'canyon driving' making the entire automated container handling process more precise and predictable.

Lamong Bay Terminal’s automated container handling system is designed and built entirely by Konecranes and the handover of the automated systems is reported to be proceeding smoothly resulting in a delighted customer, with Mr. Prasetyadi, Project Manager, Pelindo III commenting:

“Lamong Bay Terminal is the next generation of container terminal. Thanks to the reliability, productivity, predictability and safety provided by our Konecranes automated container handling system, we will provide our shipping line customers with an uninterrupted, reliable container flow. This will be the key to build up business success in Indonesia and South-East Asia.”
