Container Line Staff Applauded for Their Charity

UK – Certainly no stranger to winning awards for the excellence of their freight and container shipping services, this month saw Swiss headquartered box line MSC collect an entirely different honour, as the company’s UK staff were recognised for their personal generosity, receiving the top accolade for Most Sustained Scheme and for Best Overall Campaign, in the National Payroll Giving Excellence Awards 2016.

MSC was applauded at the London-based event last week, at which household names like Sainsbury’s, M&S, Cancer Research UK and HM Revenue and Customs were also judged to have implemented impressive payroll programmes. Payroll giving allows employees to donate money to their chosen charity on a tax-free basis, direct from their salary. It has been actively operating at the UK headquarters of MSC since 2010.

Just last week we reported how staff at the Ipswich office this year raised almost £29,000 for Alzheimer’s research supported partly with a series of fund raising events, but it seems their generosity extends even further as this latest award shows. The Most Sustained Scheme award recognises companies who have shown continued dedication to promoting payroll giving for more than three years. Judges selected MSC for Best Overall Campaign in the belief that it ‘added the most value and inspiration to payroll giving from all applicants to the awards’ leading Anne Gordon, Finance Director at MSC UK to comment:

“I have always been extremely proud of the enthusiasm MSC staff give to raising money for charity. They are tremendously generous and creative in their fundraising activities. Payroll giving has built slowly but surely over the past six years, so I am delighted that we have achieved a massive 72% of our employees enrolled on to the payroll giving scheme. This enables our charities to benefit not only from the generosity of our staff and the company matching contribution but also from the tax benefits that payroll giving provides.

“We have worked hard to raise awareness of the advantages it brings. We were delighted to win the Most Sustained Scheme Award, but absolutely stunned to win Best Overall Campaign. It is fair to say our staff deserve this recognition.”

MSC UK votes for an annual charity to receive 50% of their funds raised, while the balance goes to a number of smaller charities close to the hearts of employees and their families.
