MEDITERRANEAN / NORTH AMERICA – Danish shipping giant Maersk Line has announced that it is to increase it’s rate per container by three hundred dollars on it’s shipments from the Mediterranean and North Africa to the US and Canada. The new rates will apply from the 1st of October.

The news follows an announcement in July by the company that from the 1st of September it is increasing rates on its Northern Europe routes to North America by $400 per 20-foot unit and $500 for 40-foot equivalent units.

In a statement Maersk said:

“The trading conditions for the carriers operating in these markets are still subject to unacceptable rate levels and the situation is unsustainable in the longer term. The rate increase is necessary to continue to operate our services with the high level of reliability our customers have come to expect from Maersk Line.”

The increase shall apply both to dry and reefer cargoes.
