US – After he reached the dizzy career height of being made President of Global Products for logistics outfit Expeditors, Dan Wall thought about how his own progress from entry level to executive and decided he should do something for both the company, and young staff joining it. Now Expeditors is prepared to share with anyone the details of their success in this realm.

Dan Wall’s thought led to the Opportunity Knocks (OK) internship program aimed at 16 to 24-year-olds with no degree looking to start a career. Launched in 2008, it has so far helped 1,200 young people, with more than 500 gaining onsite internships or student work-studies before lockdown., with over 90 becoming long term employees and a further 800 helped virtually over the last 12 months.

Despite the inconveniences of the pandemic, those 800 who have been involved since 2020 have been inspired with supply chain career case studies or computer and interview skills and now Expeditors has pledged to share both its template for the OK program and best practices with interested companies.

The turnover rate of OK alumni in the first two years is five times lower than typical new hires. Internal surveys have shown that staff engagement has increased for 57% of staff involved in the program. Meanwhile 90% of OK supervisors and mentors reported personal skill development and supervisors and mentors taking part have reported increased employee engagement in their teams, with 97% saying they would recommend involvement in the program. Lenora Turner, Director of the OK program, comments:
