NETHERLANDS - Liebherr-Werk Nenzing GmbH, the multi national materials handling equipment group, had notable success on Monday when they were awarded “Crane of the Year” for the company’s LHM 280, a machine versatile enough to handle loads up to 84 tonnes and a reach of up to 40 metres. The units can cope equally well with shipping containers, bulk goods or conventional general cargo.
The ceremony was at the Beurs van Berlage, the former stock exchange building, in Amsterdam, and was organised by the International Bulk Journal with the crane award sponsored by ClassNK, a Japanese ship classification society devoted to safety at sea.
The LHM 280 has proved a worthy successor to the LHM 250 with a possible turnover of 1000 tonnes per hour and its ability to cope with Handymax size bulk carriers. The units are particularly suited to ports where space is at a premium coping with both length and draft restrictions, proven by the successful sale of 15 cranes in the 14 months since production began.
The award was handed to Liebherr’s Senior Design Manager, Mr. Walter Mietschnig, who is largely responsible for the concept of the company’s harbour crane strategy.
