US – Crowley Maritime Corporation has announced that Brett Bennett will join the company August 3 as Senior Vice President and General Manager of Crowley Logistics. He will report to Ray Fitzgerald, Crowley’s Chief Operating Officer, and work from the corporate headquarters in Jacksonville, Florida.

Bennett comes to Crowley from Wallenius Wilhelmsen Solutions where he served as Senior Vice President and Head of Global Terminals and Stevedoring.

Bennett is succeeding Steve Collar, who retired last month after a distinguished 43-year career with Crowley.

US – Walter Leger Jr., has been appointed to the Board of Commissioners of the Port of New Orleans (NOLA). He will serve a five year term and succeeds Arnold Baker as one of four Orleans Parish representatives.

Port Commissioners also serve as Commissioners of the New Orleans Public Belt Railroad (NOPB) board, and Leger will become NOPB’s newest commissioner with this appointment.

US – Alameda County labour leader Andreas Cluver has been elected President of the Port of Oakland’s governing Board. Cluver succeeds Ces Butner who had been Board President for the past two years. Butner, a prominent Oakland business executive, will remain on the Board as a Commissioner.

Oakland Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Barbara Leslie was elected the Port Board’s First Vice President. Commissioners selected well-known Oakland architect Yui Hay Lee as Second Vice President.

US – Shipowners Claims Bureau (SCB) the manager of the American Club, has announced senior appointments to its management team in New York. Dorothea Ioannou takes on the role of Deputy Chief Operating Officer with immediate effect, and Mary McCafferty becomes Senior Vice President and Director of Claims for the Americas as from the beginning of September.

Ioannou will relinquish her previous oversight of business development to Tom Hamilton who will now take on that assignment in conjunction with his existing duties as Chief Underwriting Officer, in which position he will continue to oversee underwriting strategy. 

US – CSafe Global has announced Denis Caputo as Director of Life Science Sales, Latin America. Caputo has been part of the cold chain industry and life sciences for his entire career and held various business development roles all focused on Latin America. Most recently, he was with va-Q-tec managing Healthcare & Logistics business development in Mexico, Puerto Rico and Florida. As part of the CSafe team, Caputo is responsible for customers in Central and South America and the Caribbean.

US – UPS has announced the appointment of Angela Hwang to the Board of Directors, effective since July 13. Hwang is a member of Pfizer’s Executive Team and is Group President of the Pfizer Biopharmaceuticals Group.

US – UK – The National Cargo Bureau (NCB), a US inspection body authorised to certify compliance with Dangerous Goods regulations, has appointed James Douglas to the position of Chief Executive Officer of their group company Exis Technologies, effective immediately. Exis, based in the UK, was purchased by NCB in April 2018.

UK – Sailors’ Society has appointed Reverend Hasna Khatun as its new Port Chaplain to its Southampton team. Khatun will provide welfare and chaplaincy support to the thousands of seafarers who visit Southampton port each year.

An ordained Pioneer Minister, Khatun has held a number of faith-based roles over the years including most recently as Chaplain to Centenary Quay, Woolston. In the past she has also worked as a teacher and actor, and speaks several languages.

UK – Dipesh Shah has been announced as the new Chair of Highways England, effective from September 1. He takes over from Colin Matthews who has been in the role for 6 years.

UK – Lynne Owens has been reappointed as the Director General of the National Crime Agency (NCA). She will now remain in the post for a further 2 years from January 2021. Owens took up her post as Director General of the NCA in January 2016.

During a career in law enforcement over 30 years, she has held a number of policing roles including Assistant Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police and Chief Constable of Surrey.

UK – Menzies Distribution has announced the appointment of Stuart Warriner as a Strategic Advisor to the Board.

HONG KONG – Tigers has appointed Jana Schebera as its new Managing Director, China. Prior to moving to Tigers, Schebera spent more than a decade in the industry holding positions that included Managing Director for Hong Kong and South China at Rhenus Logistics, and business development roles at M+R Spedag Group.

Schebera will be based at Tigers’ Tsing Yi e-commerce fulfilment facility in Hong Kong.

RUSSIA – Volga Dnepr Group has named Konstanin Vekshin as Chief Commercial Officer. Vekshin joined the Volga-Dnepr Group in 1997, and developed his career from sales executive to CCO subgroup Vice-President, Sales and Marketing. Vekshin has a vast range of industry experience from Vice-President, Charter & Government Division with Centurion Cargo Airlines, to Vice-President of Air Freight Charters with Bertling Logistics.

In October 2016, Vekshin was appointed Managing Director of CargoLogicManagement, and since August 2018 has held the position of Executive President, Charter Cargo Operations (CCO) for Volga-Dnepr Airlines.

The Group has also announced changes in the Board of Directors. The restructured line-up includes:

  • Alexey Isaikin - Chairman of the Board, the founder and co-owner of the Volga-Dnepr Group
  • Sergey Shklyanik - Deputy Chairman, co-owner of the Volga-Dnepr Group
  • Tatiana Arslanova - Deputy Chairman, Executive Operating Director of Volga-Dnepr Group
  • Ruben Vardanyan - an independent Director, Russian business leader, social entrepreneur and philanthropist
  • Giorgio Callegari - an independent Director, a member of the Boards of Directors in Insurance Public Companies Ingosstrakh and Enel Russia, and a former member of the Boards of Directors of Alitalia and Aeroflot
  • Ella Sytnik - an independent Director and a partner of Ward Howell, specialising in organisational transformation and team development management
  • Stanislav Tillich - an independent Director and former Prime Minister of Saxony

Three committees of the Board of Directors have been formed: Strategy and Transformation, Budget and Audit, Staff and Appointments, two of which are headed by independent Directors.

WORLDWIDE – The Transported Asset Protection Association (TAPA) has established a new Advisory Board in its Europe, Middle East & Africa (EMEA) region to spearhead its transformation into an end-to-end supply chain resilience organisation under the leadership of President and CEO, Thorsten Neumann.

The four Advisory Board members are, Gilad Solnik, Director Security & Loss Prevention, EMEA, Amazon; Michael Schmidt, Chief Security Officer, Volkswagen; Frank Ewald, Head of Corporate Security & Crisis Management, Deutsche Post DHL Group; Paul Linders, Global Head of Security, CEVA Logistics.

Under its new organisational structure, TAPA EMEA will also retain elected Officers in the roles of Chair, Vice Chair and Treasurer, namely Marcel Saarloos of HP, Jason Breakwell of Wallenborn Transports, and Ap Boom of Amazon respectively.
