CHINA – Konecranes, the heavy lift machinery specialists, have confirmed a further order for two of the company’s overhead travelling cranes destined for Sichuan Province in China. This time not for moving containers but meant for the Dongfang Electric Company, a major producer of generating equipment for hydro, thermal and nuclear power plants.

With the push toward ever increasing output the turbines required at the power stations are increasing in size exponentially. The two units being supplied to the Chinese, although compact in size, can handle 280 tonnes apiece. Spanning 33 metres they can lift to 28 metres. As China modernises larger employers there are beginning to realise the importance of safety standards and adopting the necessary equipment to avoid potential accidents.

The size of these latest cranes means Dongfang are able to install them to handle the larger turbines without a major redevelopment of their existing facilities as well as the cost of the new equipment.

The installation of the cranes is planned for July 2010. The value of the contract has not been revealed nor whether any contractor has been appointed to ship the order.
