IRELAND - An Post, the Irish Post Office, has awarded the contract for the carriage of its mail freight between Ireland and the Baltic to Latvian-based airline airBaltic. The contract will see airBaltic operate a thrice-weekly run between Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia and Ireland on their scheduled service ex Dublin.

Speaking of the new deal Ian McCool, Managing Director of IAM - airBaltic’s Irish cargo General Service Agent – said that: “We are talking modest traffic levels, amounting to around 36,000 kilos per annum. But this is the first time airBaltic has won business from An Post, and we are very pleased both with this prestigious contract and also with the welcome additional revenue.”

The airline, which has the Latvian state as its majority share holder, has weathered the recent problems that have beset the whole air transport industry surprisingly well, with load factors in the January to November period 2009 up 7% from last year.
