IRELAND – NETHERLANDS – EUROPE -It has been a good November for companies within container shipping and ferry divisions of the Irish Continental Group in terms of industry accolades. Earlier this month their Netherlands based freight carrier Eucon Shipping and Transport won the Short Sea Shipping Company of the Year Award 2011, sponsored by the Irish Maritime Development Office (IMDO), which recognises the strategically important role of short sea shipping to the Republic’s economy. Eucon offers Irish exporters access to worldwide markets via its regular feeder services to Rotterdam, Antwerp and Southampton operating from the ports of Dublin, Cork and Belfast.

Meantime in the category for the Logistics Company of the Year Award 2011, sponsored by the Dublin Port Company, Eucon also featured but were beaten off by Caffrey International. The County Meath based company is a specialist provider of road transport and logistics services between Ireland, the UK and continental Europe. The award recognises the importance of logistics and supply chain management firms to the exporting effort of companies trading internationally from Ireland and the other nominees were two Dublin based companies DHL Global Forwarding (Ireland) and Geodis Ireland Limited.

This week at the Irish Travel Trades News travel awards ceremony held in Dublin, Irish Ferries was presented with Ireland’s Best Ferry Company award, the thirteenth time that the award has gone to the company in the 20 year history of the event. This mainly passenger based accolade comes just months after Irish Ferries introduced the industry’s first bookable smart phone app and company spokesman Declan Mescall believes the company’s development and adoption of leading edge communications was a major factor in winning the award.
