Good and Bad in the Week's Update of HR News in Shipping, Freight and Logistics

Some High Level Appointments and the Demise of an Old Soldier

DENMARK – With regard to current announcements of appointments and departures in the freight, shipping and logistics sectors, we start with the news that Henriette Thygesen has been appointed new Chair of the Board of Directors of Maersk Supply Service as of June 1. Current Chair of Maersk Supply Service and Vice CEO of AP Moller - Maersk Claus Hemmingsen will leave AP Moller - Maersk at the end of June having concluded on the separation of the oil and oil related companies.

Thygesen has been CEO of Svitzer since September 2016. She is a member of the AP Moller - Maersk Executive Leadership Team and has held leading roles across a number of AP Moller – Maersk business units over the last 25 years, including CEO of Damco Americas. In addition to her role as CEO of Svitzer, Henriette is Chairman of Damco Forwarding and a member of the Board of Directors of COWI.

In March 2019, the Maersk Board of Directors decided to retain full ownership of Maersk Supply Service as a result of the subdued market outlook impacting the ability to find a sustainable ownership structure for the company outside of Maersk.

SWIZTERLAND – FRANCE – CEVA Logistics has announced that Rodolphe Saadé, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of CMA CGM, has been elected as Chairman of the CEVA Board of Directors, with Rolf Watter acting as Vice-Chairman.

Marvin Schlanger, Victor Balli, Dr. Rosalind Rivaz and John Smith did not stand for re-election at the company’s recent Annual General Meeting. Rolf Watter, Daniel Hurstel and Emanuel Pearlman were re-elected for a one-year term of office until the AGM 2020. Three new Board members have been elected: Farid Salem, Michel Sirat and Béatrice de Clermont-Tonnerre.

The three independent directors are Rolf Watter, Manny Pearlman and Béatrice de Clermont-Tonnerre.

Additionally, Nicolas Sartini, who currently holds the position of Group Chief Operating Officer and Deputy CEO has been named Chief Executive Officer as from June 1. He will replace Xavier Urbain who will become Executive Advisor to Rodolphe Saadé.

Pierre-Olivier Landry has been named as the Company’s new Chief Human Resources Officer effective May 1. Landry will report directly to the company’s CEO and will be based in Marseille, France. Landry joins CEVA from Geodis Freight Forwarding where he also held the role of Chief Human Resources Officer.

He succeeds Pierre Girardin, who was CEVA’s Chief Human Resources Officer since January 2015. Girardin has decided to pursue new opportunities outside CEVA.

SPAIN – PORTUGAL – Celestino Silva will take over as Managing Director of Dachser’s European Logistics (EL) Iberia business unit. He succeeds Juan Quintana, who has opted to leave the company to pursue new professional opportunities.

UK – V.Group has announced the appointment of Graham Westgarth as Chief Executive Officer. Westgarth has served on V.Group’s board since September 2018 and will take over from Ian El-Mokadem who has informed the Board of his desire to leave the company.

US – Crowley Maritime has announced the appointment of Jonathan Zier as Manager of Business Development in Houston, Texas. Zier will report to Johan Sperling, Vice President of Marine Services in the Crowley Shipping group.

US – Phoenix Logistics has announced the appointment of Robert Kriewaldt as Senior Vice President.

US – Worldwide Express has announced the promotions of Chief Financial Officer Rob Rose to the role of President, and Somer Web, currently Senior Vice President of Finance, to CFO. Both will be based at the company’s headquarters in Dallas, Texas.

JAPAN – K Line has announced a series of changes of Directors and Audit & Supervisory Board Members. From June 21, Directors Jiro Asakura and Hiromichi Aoki will retire from their positions, with Asakura taking up the role as Special Executive Advisor. Kiyoshi Hosomizo will also retire as an Outside Director on June 18 and will become the President of Japan Exchange Regulation.

Senior Managing Executive Officers Kazuhiko Harigai and Yukio Toriyama will both become Directors with Kenji Yamada, Vice-President and Professor, Department of Interdisciplinary Studies in Law and Policy, Faculty of Law, Kyoto Sangyo University and Ryuhel Uchida, Director at Effissimo Capital Management, will both become Outside Directors. All four appointments are effective as of June 21.

From June 21, Audit & Supervisory Board Member Keisuke Yoshida and Outside Audit & Supervisory Board Member Toshikazu Hayashi, will retire from the Board.

Special Advisor Tsuyoshi Yamauchi and Special Advisor and Managing Director of K Line China Kunihiko Arai have been named as Audit & Supervisory Board Members. Atsumi Harasawa, Attorney at Law, Igarashi-Watanabe-Esaka Law Office, has been named Outside Audit & Supervisory Board Member. All three appointments are effective June 21.

WORLDWIDE – The International Air Cargo Association (TIACA) has announced the appointment of three new Board Members as part of ongoing expansion plans. Bertrand Schmoll, the Chair of ECS Group, Dr Khalfan Al Shueili, the Chief Executive Officer of Oman Aviation Services, Emir Pineda, Trade and Logistics Marketing Manager at Miami International Airport, and Turhan Özen, Chief Cargo Officer of Turkish Airlines, have all joined the TIACA Board, with a fourth new Board member to be announced next week.

UK – On a final sombre note we heard this week of the passing of Jimmy James, a gentleman of the old school about whom we wrote a short piece when he was honoured by the British International Freight Association (BIFA) with the Lifetime Award at the 2012 Awards ceremony. The driving force behind the London Freight Club and an ex Grenadier Guard he will be sorely missed.
