Freight Forwarders Invited to Try Shipping Cars at Six to a Container

Racking System Enables Secure Stacking and Space and Time Saving Solution
Shipping News Feature

UK – WORLDWIDE – Over time we have covered the shipping of cars by various means, including aids to loading containers and trailers, and each has its own merits. Much depends on the vehicle or vehicles involved, new or second hand? Extremely expensive or old jalopy? Supercar or SUV? Each case needs the input of a specialist freight forwarder with experience of a range of vehicles to ensure safe delivery to the consignee, with incidental damage an obvious risk with cargo so delicate yet unwieldy.

Unsworth Global Logistics (UGL) and Consolidated Car Shipping (CCS) have joined forces to what they see will be a solution for anyone looking to maximise the space offered by a standard shipping container, claiming the ability to load up to six vehicles into one forty five foot box using the innovative fitted metal racking service available from CCS. The pair have been using this racking to transport a variety of high-end luxury vehicles and say the racking can be assembled inside any High Cube container by just two trained people.

UGL has been operating approved loading facilities with fully trained teams at Felixstowe and Southampton ports since 2012. They also operate a unique training facility at Felixstowe for the benefit of appropriate partners and plan to open a similar regional centre in Singapore soon and now several removal companies are working in partnership with CCS and finding it allows extra storage space to be created by raising the vehicles up with the use of the racking.

The companies say the entire process of loading four regular cars takes no more than 75 minutes and whilst the main benefit is achieved by repeat movements of uniform vehicles in regular patterns in multiple containers, systems can be tailored to suit the needs of the client or partner. Some of the more unusual movements have included Morgan sports cars for the prestigious Morgan Rally Championship and six Bugatti supercars valued at more than £16 million. UGL Director, Charles Hogg, comments:

“With training, this racking system is easy to use and offers users an endless combination of container transportation. It is more secure than using a RoRo vessel and other forwarders can offer it to their clients as a value added service. Significant savings can be achieved on many trade routes especially where RoRo carriers exercise a monopoly or where no through-RoRo option exists without transhipment.’’

Currently there are over 2,500 racking units accessible to use and with an estimated saving of more than two hours per container loading compared to wood, along with the added bonus that the racking can be returned from destination to the supplier as either FCL or LCL, Consolidated Car Shipping says it would be interested in hearing from any vehicle shippers who control regular volumes either to or from UK to explore how they might work in partnership to benefit from the unique advantages that this technology offers.
