Four Years Data on Hull Antifouler Indicates Substantial Fuel Savings for Shipping Lines Possible

HPS System Quantifies Reductions in Bunkerage and Pollution

NORWAY – WORLDWIDE – According to figures released today by Jotun, the Norwegian chemicals manufacturer, ships that use its Hull Performance Solutions (HPS) antifouling system can save substantial quantities of fuel over the lifetime of their service, also markedly cutting the creation of carbon dioxide and other pollutants as a result. Working with Cosco Europe, Jotun has monitored the fuel use of a 2008-built, 10,062 TEU container vessel treated with the HPS system and found that, in comparison to other fleet ships that used standard anti foulers, the vessel had reduced fuel costs by $4.5 million and produced some 29,500 less tonnes of carbon dioxide since the HPS was applied to the vessel in 2012.

HPS combines Jotun’s SeaQuantum X200 antifouling with enhanced technical service and performance analysis in line with ISO 19030. The coating limits the growth of organisms on the hull, minimising frictional resistance, whilst the analysis monitors the vessels average performance. This combination provides a comprehensive insight into both return on investment and on-going environmental efficiency. Since receiving HPS the Cosco vessel had recorded a speed loss of just 0.76% as compared to a market average of 5.9% for vessels treated with standard antifouling solutions. Mr Alfie Ong, VP Jotun Marine Coatings said:

“As we get more and more long-term data from the system, which is the first solution of its kind to measure performance in line with ISO 19030, we get the hard evidence to prove what we already knew, namely that HPS delivers the cleanest hulls, highest efficiency and best environmental performance on the market.

“More and more key global shipping players, such as Cosco Shipping, are recognising the power of this proposition. They understand that an investment in HPS is ‘low hanging fruit’ when it comes to optimising hull performance and delivering long-term value for their vessels. We’re delighted to be able to provide documented proof of such impressive savings for them.”

The Jotun executive’s opinion was supported by the customer, as well as the data produced with Mr Hou, Deputy General Manager of Cosco Shipping Lines observing:

“HPS has proven that it helps us meet these demands; enabling market leading hull performance and unlocking significant fuel and emissions savings. We are dedicated to upholding the highest standards across the long-term for our customers. Jotun’s development of the HPS antifouling and measurement system shows that it shares those same values. We look forward to further collaboration and efficiencies, in the future.”
