PERU – Port operator DP World has opened a smart logistics centre in Lurin, Peru. The facility features fibre optic connection to its freight terminal at Callao Port, near the capital Lima, and is the first of its kind in the country. The connections mean that the Dubai headquartered company will be able to deliver information concerning customer’s shipments at the port and customs, enabling them to manage and monitor the movement of their cargo using their own electronic devices and smartphones.

DP World Callao is a greenfield terminal in the Port of Callao, approximately 10 miles from the capital Lima. The Port of Callao is one of the busiest in Latin America and the DP terminal has an annual operational capacity of 800,000 TEU, a major feature in DP’s South American operation. As a result, the opening ceremony attracted a host of senior officials, amongst them Fiorella Moulinilli, the Peruvian Deputy Transport Minister, Jose Arakaki Nakamine, Mayor of Lima, DP World Group Chairman and CEO Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem and Gerard van den Heuvel, CEO DP World Peru. Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem observed:

“This new logistics centre underlines our commitment to enabling trade across the supply chain connecting ports and customs through smart technology to make life easier for business and end users. The new platform is designed to encourage trade in the region and on the west coast of South America saving time and money through the efficient movement of cargo. This development is part of our strategy to deploy state-of-the-art technology across our global portfolio of 77 marine and inland terminals worldwide.”

“We are inspired by the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai to make the city a leader in everything it does. DP World is a knowledge exporter, supporting the economic development of nations where we have business, and our operations can be found in markets that make up 53% of global trade, an achievement made possible by sound strategic planning and innovation.”

The DP World Group Chairman and CEO said that his company is planning to open more logistics centres across Peru to manage container traffic in Callao through smart technology and monitoring of shipments for the benefit of traders, investors and the country’s economic growth.
