Death of a Veteran Leads Staff News in the Road Haulage, Freight and Logistics Sectors

Two Industry Stalwarts Pass in the Last Few Weeks

UK – A sad start to the weekly round-up of staff changes in the global freight and logistics industry with the passing of two road haulage industry stalwarts. Firstly the death of Harold Read, owner of Harold Read Transport, who died in November at the age of 90. He joined the army at the age of 15 and was part of an advance party from 1 Buckinghamshire Regiment that landed on Sword Beach on D-Day, 12 hours after the Paratroopers and Commandos. In 1947, Harold started working as a driver for his brother, George, before branching out himself in 1954, buying a truck from George and hauling coal and later steel in Ebbw Vale.

UK – William Kyle Baird, a Director of Baird Brothers Transport, passed away on November 21. Baird become involved in the family's haulage business in 1983 when he passed his HGV driving test. He later concentrated on the mechanical side of the company once the business moved a short distance away from Lockbrickland to Banbridge, Northern Ireland.

UK – Heavy-duty vehicle lifting solutions firm, TotalKare has announced two new additions to its sales and marketing team. Steve Braund has been named Marketing Manager, following the promotion of Tristan Johnston, who moves from Marketing into a key Operational role within the company. Jack Longstaff has also started a 12 month training and induction period before taking up the role of Trainee Area Sales Manager.

UK – De Nora, the electrochlorination equipment firm has announced Dr Stelios Kyriacou as General Manager of its Balpure® Ballast Water Management System business unit. Kyriacou joins De Nora Water Technologies from Wärtsilä, where he managed the research, development, design and certification of the full Wärtsilä BWMS range.

SWITZERLAND – Martina Rupp has been named as the new Corporate Head of Communications and Marketing of Panalpina, effective January 1, 2018. Based in Basel, Rupp will report directly to Stefan Karlen, CEO, and become a member of the Executive Committee.

NETHERLANDS – Easyfresh Logistics has announced the appointment of Teun Messemaker as its new European Regional Manager, located in Breda, the Netherlands. Messemaker will be replacing Rainier Wolsleger, recently appointed Valencia, Spain based Managing Director for Easyfresh Iberia.

NORWAY – DENMARK – Xeneta has announced the formation of its NVO Commercial team with Paul Mullins, previously SVP of Global Sales at INTTRA, joining Xeneta as Head of NVO. Joining Mullins is Ronald Plevier as Director of Business Development, who was also at INTTRA as Regional Sales Director in EMEA. Jocelyn Hansen as Director of Business Development at Xeneta, based in Copenhagen, Denmark. Hansen has had an extensive ocean shipping career with INTTRA for the past 16 years in various roles across Denmark, UK, Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands. Her last role was as Global Relationship Director, Account Management at INTTRA.

Mullins, Plevier, and Hansen join Andreas Leichert, Director Business Development NVO at Xeneta who has been already pushing Xeneta into the freight forwarding industry for the past year.

SWEDEN – US – Martin Weissburg, currently President of Volvo Construction Equipment, has been named President of Mack Trucks, effective June 1, 2018. He will continue to be a member of the Executive Board for the Volvo Group. Weissburg will succeed Dennis Slagle, who has led the company since 2008. Effective June 1, 2018, Dennis Slagle will remain with the Volvo Group as a special projects leader reporting to Martin Lundstedt, President and CEO.

US – The American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) has announced a series of changes to its senior management. Howard Fireman, previously the organisation's Chief Technology Officer, will take on the role of ABS Chief Digital Officer. Joseph Gollapalli joins ABS as Vice President of Digital Technology. Gollapalli previously worked as the Chief Information Officer and Digital Transformation Leader for the Drilling division of GE Oil and Gas.

Additionally, joining ABS as Vice President of Strategic Development is Ryan Moody, reporting directly to Chairman, President, and CEO Christopher Wiernicki.

US – United Airlines has announced Kate Gebo as Executive Vice President of Human Resources and Labor Relations, replacing Mike Bonds, who previously announced his retirement. Gebo will report directly to CEO Oscar Munoz. Gebo currently serves as Senior Vice President and Chief Customer Officer.

US – Joseph Zambrano has been named Senior Vice President of Operations of PLM, specialists in fleet management of refrigerated trailers. Zambrano will be based out of the Fleet Solutions Centre in Newark, New Jersey, and will be reporting to CEO Keith Shipp. 

US – Allison Transmission has announced the promotion of Otto Szalavari to Managing Director of Global Marketing. Szalavari joined Allison in February as director global marketing information and product strategy, with a focus on international and domestic business activities and commercial sales agreements.

US – George Abernathy has been named as the new Chief Revenue Officer at TransRisk.

US – NFI has announced the appointment of Mike Greco as its new Senior Vice President of Global Logistics. Before joining NFI, Greco most recently served as Managing Director for Geodis USA for over four years, has during his 20 year career, has held several senior positions with companies like Panalpina and YRC Freight

CANADA – Canadian Pacific Railway (CP) has announced two new Vice Presidents and a reorganisation of the group’s structure. The Sales and Marketing team will comprise three business units, each led by a Vice-President reporting to John Brooks, Senior Vice-President and Chief Marketing Officer. The business units will be Grain and Fertilizers; Energy, Chemicals and Plastics (ECP) and Merchandise; and Intermodal and Automotive.

Coby Bullard joined CP on December 1 to lead Sales and Marketing for ECP and Merchandise. Bullard comes to CP from CR England and Crest Logistics where he was most recently President, Intermodal.

Eileen Pedante Stone also joined on December 1, leading the Grain and Fertilizers business unit. Stone joins CP from UPS Freight, where she garnered more than 25 years of experience in sales and marketing in the freight transportation industry across North America. Stone was most recently Vice-President Sales.

Jonathan Wahba, who joined CP in February 2017 as Vice-President Sales and Marketing, Intermodal and Grain, will now lead Sales and Marketing for Intermodal and Automotive.

WORLDWIDE – BIMCO Secretary General and CEO, Angus Frew, will extend his contract to the end of 2022. Frew was appointed Secretary General & CEO of BIMCO in September 2013. He is also a Director on the board of Global Ship Lease and a former Chief Executive of the UK Chamber of Shipping.
