US – The first round-up of appointments for 2021 was meant to start with President-Elect Joe Biden’s nomination of former Mayor of South Bend, Indiana, Pete Buttigieg, to the role of Secretary of the US Department of Transportation, but continuing on from the 2020 trend of astounding events, current Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao has announced her resignation in the wake of Trump’s response over the insurrection of the US Capitol by pro-Trump rioters.

Jumping ship a mere 9 days before Biden’s inauguration, Chao's resignation will take effect from January 11, but she said she will help Buttigieg with his transition into the role.

Biden has also nominated Boston Mayor Marty Walsh to the position of Secretary of the US Department of Labor.

US – Before leaving her role, Elaine Chao, Transportation Secretary, has announced new appointments to the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) Drone Advisory Committee (DAC). The new members will serve a two-year term and join DAC Chairman Michael Chasen, Chairman of the Advisory Board for PrecisionHawk USA. The new members are:

  • Seleta Reynolds, General Manager, Los Angeles Department of Transportation
  • Dr. Paul Hsu, Founder and Chair, HSU Foundation
  • Matt Parker, President, Precision Integrated Programs
  • Molly Wilkinson, Vice President, Regulatory Affairs, American Airlines

US – PayCargo has appointed two new Vice Presidents to its senior management team, Marta Ramirez, and Ken Nieze. Ramirez is the new Global VP, Human Resources, based at PayCargo’s Florida headquarters, with Nieze appointed VP of Sales, West Coast, based in Seattle, Washington.

US – Insurance firm, Thomas Miller Americas, has announced the appointment of Noreen Arralde as Senior Claims Director at its New Jersey Office. Arralde re-joins Thomas Miller Americas from another P&I provider, where she spent two years, serving as a Vice President, covering the New York metropolitan area. She previously worked at Thomas Miller Americas from 2012-2018, following 13 years with a US litigation firm and six years as claims manager for a global container shipping company.

US – Patriot Rail Company LLC and Patriot Port Holdings, LLC (Patriot), announced that its Chief Financial Officer, Jennifer Whiteman left the company at the end of 2020 to spend more time with family and pursue personal interests. Effective since January 1, Matt Nelson, previously Vice President - Accounting and Finance, has become the new CFO.

CANADA – The Lion Electric Company, a manufacturer of all-electric medium and heavy-duty urban vehicles, has announced that Isabelle Adjahi has been appointed to the newly created role of Vice President, Investor Relations and Sustainable Development, effective January 11.

In this new role, Adjahi will be responsible for developing and implementing an investor relations strategy aimed at maintaining relationships with investors and analysts through an ongoing dialogue about Lion's corporate, business, financial objectives and growth. Reporting to Nicolas Brunet, Lion's Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, she will also lead company-wide ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) strategy and activities.

UK – The Port of Tyne has announced that Chris Green will join its business development team as Commercial Director. Green joins the Port of Tyne from RMS Ports where he was most recently Interim Project Director.

UK – West Yorkshire logistics firm ADD Express has announced that Industry veteran Bryan Mottershead has been appointed Business Development Manager. Mottershead served in the British Army, serving his last post as a member of the Royal Artillery Motorcycle Display Team in Woolwich, before starting his logistics career as a driver with Todmorden-based James Shepherd Transport.

GERMANY – On January 1, Burkhard Eling became Chief Executive Officer and Spokesperson of the Executive Board of Dachser. He heads the Corporate Strategy, Human Resources, Marketing Executive unit, which also includes Corporate Key Account Management and the Corporate Governance & Compliance division. Eling succeeds Bernhard Simon, who will take over as Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the family-owned company in mid-2021.

Also moving to the Supervisory Board with Simon is the former Chief Operations Officer (COO) Road Logistics, Michael Schilling. In response, Dachser has made further changes to the Executive Board as of January 1. Two managers have been promoted to the company’s operational management body: Stefan Hohm as Chief Development Officer (CDO) and Alexander Tonn as COO Road Logistics. They are joined on the Executive Board by Robert Erni, who left DSV Panalpina to join Dachser on September 1, and has taken up the role of Chief Financial Officer (CFO). The five-man Executive Board team is completed by Edoardo Podestà, who has been COO Air & Sea Logistics since October 2019.

JORDAN – The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has announced that Kamil Al-Awadhi will be appointed IATA’s Regional Vice President for Africa and Middle East (AME), effective March 1. Al-Awadhi succeeds Muhammad Albakri who will become IATA’s Senior Vice-President for Customer, Financial, and Digital Services (CFDS), also effective March 1. Albakri will replace Aleks Popovich in the CFDS role upon his retirement.

Al-Awadhi will lead the Association’s activities across AME from its regional office in Amman, Jordan. He will report to the IATA Director General and CEO and join IATA’s Strategic Leadership Team.
