Appointments and Departures in Freight, Logistics and Shipping This Week

US – We start this week’s movements of shipping, freight and logistics staff with a Presidential appointment as Barack Obama has nominated Christopher Hart to head the National Transportation Safety Board, succeeding Deborah Hersman, who left the NTSB to head the National Safety Council.

US – Effective July 1, Lars Ljoen will join the Ceres Terminals Management Team as Vice President of Cruise Services / RoRo Services. He will relocate from Florida, where he worked as Vice President of Business Development at Ceres Marine Terminals in South Florida, to East Brunswick, New Jersey.

US – President of Truckload Carriers Association, Chris Burruss has resigned from his position for personal reasons. Executive Vice President William Giroux and Vice President Debbie Sparks will be managing the organisation’s day to day operations on an interim basis, until a suitable replacement is found.

US – Roadrunner Transportation Systems has announced three new appointments to complete the reorganisation of its Executive Management team. Grant Crawford joins as President of LTL, Patrick McKay has been promoted to President of Truckload Logistics and Kevin Charlebois has been promoted to President of Transport Management Solutions. Each will report to COO Brian van Helden.

US – On June 27, Samuel Woodward resigned as President and Chief Executive Officer of Horizon Lines and has left his position as a member of the Board of Directors. Horizon Lines has named Director Steven Rubin as Woodward’s successor on an interim basis.

CANADA – Kinaxis has appointed David Kelly to Vice President of Professional Services, replacing Monique Rupert who has announced her retirement.

SWITZERLAND – Ceva Logistics has announced the appointment of Brett Bissell as Chief Operating Officer, Contract Logistics. He will report to Xavier Urbain, CEO and Member of the Executive Board.

DENMARK – Following the resignation of its President and CEO Carsten Mortensen, NORDEN has announced Vice President Klaus Nyborg as interim CEO, with immediate effect. Mortensen will still be available to the Company for a period of time. NORDEN has initiated a recruitment process in order to appoint a new CEO and Nyborg has ruled himself out as a candidate for the position on a permanent basis.

GERMANY – Rolf Habben Jansen, who has been a member of the Hapag-Lloyd’s Executive Board since April 1, has assumed the position of CEO effective since July 1. He succeeds Michael Behrendt, who left the Hapag-Lloyd's Executive Board as scheduled on June 30, as did COO Ulrich Kranich. The new COO is Anthony Firmin who joined the Executive Board today after 19 years at the company. Peter Ganz continues as CFO, a position he has held since April 2009.

UK – Des Evans has stepped down from his role as Chief Executive of MAN Truck and Bus due to illness. Until a suitable successor has been found, the Board of Directors will take over his duties.

UK – Allport Cargo Services (ACS) has announced the appointment of former DB Schenker Director and Head of Air Freight at Panalpina, Steve Williams as its new Managing Director of Air Freight, effective since July 1.

UK – Lloyd’s Register has promoted Director of Business Development & Innovation, Nick Brown to the position of Marine Chief Operating Officer (COO), reporting to Marine Director Tom Boardley. David Barrow becomes Regional Marine Manager (RMM) for a new Northern Europe region while Apostolos Poulovassilis is RMM for Southern Europe, Middle East and Africa. Iain Wilson and Tim Protheroe remain in their Asia and Americas roles. Brown will retain leadership of the Business Development & Innovation team, including Luis Benito (Marketing), Hector Sewell (Sales) and Gwynne Lewis (Consulting) who will be joined by LR’s ‘other’ Nick Brown, the Global Marine Communications Manager.

UK – The Road Haulage Association (RHA) has announced the appointment of Richard Burnett as its new Chief Executive. Burnett joins the RHA from Samworth Brothers where he was Managing Director of its Distribution Arm. In May, current Chief Executive Geoff Dunning, announced that he is to retire from the position on August 31. The RHA has also appointed Barry Hood as its Area Manager of the Midlands and Western Region, effective July 2. He will be based at the RHA’s Bristol Office.

UK – The Sustainable Shipping Initiative (SSI) has appointed Alastair Fischbacher as its new Director. Fischbacher previously worked for Rio Tinto before retiring earlier this year.

UK – Carl zu Dohna has been appointed Brand Director of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles in the UK, succeeding Alex Smith who, as of September 1, will assume the position of Brand Director got Volkswagen Passenger Cars.

UK – Geoff Gillo has taken the role of non-Executive Director at the Pall-EX Group, whilst Cris Stephenson has accepted the position of UK Managing Director for the group with his predecessor, Adrian Russell, taking the role of Group Managing Director.

SINGAPORE – Damco has announced the appointment of Thomas Knudsen as Regional Head of its Asia business. He will be based in Singapore and assume his role from July 1, reporting directly to Hanne Sorensen, CEO for Damco.

SRI LANKA – FPS Sri Lanka has appointed Senaka Premaratne to the newly-created post of Head of Business Development.

WORLDWIDE – The Container Owners Association has added two new members to its Board of Directors: WJ Yang, Senior Vice President and Operation Group Head of Hanjin Shipping, and Uffe Ernst-Frederiksen, Head of Cargo Management at Maersk Line.
