Another Sad Loss Starts Appointments and Departures in Logistics, Shipping and Air Freight

HONG KONG – Our weekly look at staff moves in shipping and logistics begins with the air freight sector as Hong Kong Air Cargo Terminals Limited (Hactl) has announced the unexpected death of its former Chief Executive Officer, Mark Whitehead, who passed away in his sleep whilst competing in the China Sea Race, just weeks after his retirement on March 7. Whitehead stepped down from his role at Hactl at the beginning of March but remained connected with and committed to Hactl’s future development, in the new role of Advisor.

MIDDLE EAST – INDIA – Goltens has announced several promotions in the Middle East and in India. In Dubai, Pravin Kirolikar has been named Managing Director of Goltens Dubai. Kirolikar moves from the Managing Director role from the India office, where he held the role for the past eight years. Replacing Kirolikar in India is R. Sudharshan, who for the last seven years has served as Operations Head for Goltens India.

B. Jeyanthan has been appointed General Manager of Goltens Bahrain. He most recently served as the Senior Manager responsible for the Sales and Services of the Chennai and Vishakhapatnam branches in India, since 2008. Additionally, Viraj Padiyar has been named General Manager for Goltens Abu Dhabi. For the past eight years, Padiyar has worked at Goltens Dubai as Senior Sales Manager.

INDIAN OCEAN – EU Navfor has announced Rear Admiral Simone Malvagna (Italian Navy) tp assume the role of Force Commander of the European Union’s counter-piracy Operation Atalanta on board his flagship, ITN Carlo Margottini.

ASIA – UK – Britannia P&I has announced that Steve Myatt will step down from his role as Underwriting Director after 30 years of service. The company has also announced 3 new appointments in the wake of Myatt’s retirement with John O’Flaherty joining from broker JLT to head up the Club’s new Singapore operation.

Richard Inman will relocate from Britannia's London head office to the Association's Hong Kong Office. Andrew Reynolds from brokers Marsh, and Helen Todd from Shipowners P&I Club have both been named to join the London Headquarters.

UK – SCALA has announced Rob Wright as its new Senior Consultant. Wright previously worked as the Head of Distribution for Pladis Global, and prior to taking up his new position, he had already been working closely with SCALA to develop its supply chain and logistics best practice forums and its benchmarking service.

UK – John Allan CBE will stand for election as Confederation of British Industry’s (CBI) President at its AGM on June 19. Paul Drechsler will step down from the role and stand for election as Vice President.

UK – The Association of Industrial Truck Trainers (AITT) has announced the appointment of Adam Smith as its new General Manager.

UK – LOC Group has announced the appointment Dr RV Ahilan to the position of joint CEO, alongside Jerome Rutler. Rutler joined LOC as Group COO in March 2016 bringing with him more than 20 years’ experience in the oil & gas, petrochemicals and marine industries. He was appointed CEO in January 2018.

GERMANY – Jürgen Gerdes, currently heading the Post - eCommerce – Parcel (PeP) division at Deutsche Post DHL Group, takes charge of the newly created board mandate for Corporate Incubations, effective immediately. Pending the appointment of a new Head of the PeP division, Frank Appel, CEO of Deutsche Post DHL Group, will take on corresponding responsibilities in a dual role.

DENMARK – Hans Feringa has resigned from the Board of Directors at DS Norden. The resignation is a result of Team Tankers’, of which Feringa is CEO, announcement of the acquisition of Laurin Shipping, a company that is a potential competitor to Norden’s tanker business.

DENMARK – Genco has announced the establishment of a European subsidiary in Copenhagen, Denmark, and the appointment of Sune Linné Fladberg, as Commercial Director, Minor Bulk, Europe.

FINLAND – Cargotec has appointed Soili Mäkinen, Chief Information Officer and Senior Vice President of Digitalisation, as a member of the Executive Board, effective since March 26. Additionally Leena Lie, Cargotec's Senior Vice President, Communications and Investor Relations, will leave Cargotec to join Huhtamäki as Senior Vice President, Marketing and Communications, and member of the Global Executive Team, effective October 1.

Lie will continue in her current position and as a member of Cargotec's Extended Executive Board latest until the end of September, 2018.

FINLAND – Huhtamaki, food and drink packaging specialists, has announced that Katariina Hietaranta, current Head of Group Communications and Investor relations, will in the future focus on investor relations and financial communications reporting to the aforementioned Leena Lie. Lie, in turn, will report to CEO Jukka Moisio.

GREECE – Yang Ming has set up a new regional centre in the Mediterranean region, and has appointed Ted Wu as Managing Director, based in Piraeus, Greece.

CANADA – The Chamber of Shipping has announced the appointment of its Directors and Officers for 2018/19. The board includes: Kim Christensen (Chair), General Manager Operations of ACGI Shipping Inc; Garth Mitcham (Vice-Chair), Director of CSL Americas; Peter Amat (Treasurer), General Manager of Pacific Basin Shipping - Canada.

Richard Chappell, Regional Vice-President of Operations Canada, Westwood Shipping Lines; Marc Fellis, President of Westward Shipping; Dave Hill, Executive Vice-President at Wheelhouse Shipping Agency; Jack Mahoney, President of Maersk Line Canada; Oscar Pinto, Director of Valles Steamship – Canada; Donna Spalding, Director Administration, Cruise Lines International Association – North West & Canada; and Peter Swanson, Partner, Bernard LLP.

US – Navistar has announced Friedrich Baumann as Senior Vice President of Strategy and Planning, reporting to Troy Clarke, Chairman, President and CEO of Navistar. Baumann joins the company following a 24-year career at Daimler Trucks, where he served as SVP as Daimler Trucks North America, heading the Aftermarket business unit. He will also serve on the company’s senior leadership team.

US – The American Trucking Association (ATA) has announced Dan Horvath as its new Director of Safety Policy. Horvath, a 2017 LEAD ATA graduate, comes to ATA after more than five years as the Director of Compliance and Safety at TransForce.

US – Radiant Logistics has announced the appointment of Jennifer Deenihan as Director of Marketing and Communications, reporting to Chief Commercial Officer, Arnold Goldstein.

US – Americold has appointed Jim Snyder as Executive Vice President and Chief Legal Officer.

US – Bourque Logistics has announced Brian Jeffrey has joined the company’s railyard systems team.

US – AUSTRALIA – Genesee & Wyoming has announced the appointments of Bruce Carter and Cynthia Hostetler to its Board of Directors. Carter has served as a Director of G&W’s Australian subsidiary, Genesee & Wyoming Australia since 2011, and Hostetler serves as a member of the several Boards in the US.

In conjunction with the new appointments, Richard Allert and Hans Michael Norkus have informed the G&W Board that they will not stand for re-election at the end of their terms in May.

WORLDWIDE – Ocean Network Express (ONE), the container shipping joint venture between Japanese carriers, MOL, K Line, and NYK, has announced five Senior Executives to offices worldwide. Shunichiro Mizukami, Heads the East Asia region, based in Hong Kong. His role covers the East Asia region, including China, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Taiwan and Vietnam.

Colin de Souza, is the Region Head of South Asia, based in Singapore. His responsibility covers South Asia region, including Indian Sub-Continent, the Middle East, Oceania and South East Asia. Jotaro Tamura, is Region Head of Europe and Africa at ONE (Europe), based in the UK.

Nobuo Ishida heads the North American region, based in the US. Peter Duifhuizen, is Region Head of Latin America of Ocean Network Express (Latin America), based in Brazil.
