SOUTH AFRICA – The Ngqura Container Terminal (NCT) operated by Transnet Port Terminals (TPT) hit a record level for container handing volumes during August. The month saw the terminal handle a record 63,857 TEU’s of which 18,725 was imports, 16,444 exports and 28,688 transhipment cargo destined for other regional ports, with the terminal consistently achieving 29 moves per gross crane hour (GCH). Compared to June, which saw the facility handle 47,614 TEU’s, these freight volumes for August signal the highest ever handled in one month shipping via the container terminal.

The numbers have been attributed to the increase in market demand and reefer cargo season. The terminal handled 45,488 TEU’s in the comparable month demonstarting a 28.8% year on year increase demonstrating the avowed targets we reported in our article in July may well be achievable. TPT’s General Manager, Eastern Cape, Siya Mhlaluka said:

“As Transnet Port Terminals, we are pleased to have handled these volumes. We tremendously value the support of our clients and this achievement reaffirms the confidence that clients have in the Ngqura Container Terminal. The higher transhipment volumes are a result of the transhipment hub strategy, which is driven, supported and sustained by our key stakeholders and customers.

“The GCH record performance has been made possible by teamwork and improvements in vessel and yard planning. These volumes also have significant economic benefit because faster and more efficient container handling has ripple effects for the rest of the supply chain. TPT is committed to offering services which will enable the growth of its valued customers.”

The record throughput has ignited a renewed sense of enthusiasm among staff in the terminal according to Mhlaluka, who praised staff performance, particularly in the light of the challenging weather during this time of the year whilst ship-to-shore operator Caroline Ndevulana said that staff morale has been boosted by this outstanding record adding that there was good cooperation from all departments concerned including the planning teams, which were willing to implement operational changes, and the stevedores, who worked to minimise delays to vessels.
