US – Having just opened a new container drayage facility to service the requirements of rail heads, container yards and ports in the Birmingham, Alabama region Old Dominion Freight Line Inc (ODFL) apparently now has plans to construct a new cargo distribution centre in New York State close to the borders with New Hampshire and Massachusetts.

Last month ODFL began operations at its third such drayage facility in Alabama to offer pick-up and delivery to any point in the continental United States following a 21.5% jump in container drayage last year following on from a 19% hike in 2011. The company now services seventeen counties throughout the US after entering the drayage market in the early 1960’s. Wayne Bersch, Director of Container Operations for ODFL commented:

“Co-located with our Birmingham Service Centre, the new site will strengthen our network in Alabama, which includes container drayage facilities in Huntsville and Mobile. The facility will allow Old Dominion to expand coverage in the Southeast. The site will also help us meet growing demand from customers who ship domestically and globally.”

Now it appears further expansion for the group is on the horizon with reports that ODFL is about to purchase a vacant 13 acre lot on the Glenville Business and Technology Park in Schenectady County, NY. The owner of the site, the Galesi Group, says a package of incentives for the project, including a sales-tax exemption on building materials, were approved by the Schenectady County Industrial Development Agency last month and ODFL intend to construct a 40,000 square foot, $8.3 million distribution centre on the site.

According to local press estimate the total expansion investment plans for the North Carolina based carrier may reach $95 million in 2013 having committed to around $140 million last year following overall revenues of $2 billion.
