Strong Supporter of Transport Charity Passes Away

ZAMBIA – Last year ended with some tragic news for Transaid, with the death of Victor Simfukwe, who passed away in a road traffic incident on Christmas Day. He had been a part of the Transaid family since 2007, working as a Project Manager on many of Transaid's highest profile initiatives in Zambia.

Simfukwe played an instrumental part in delivering the hugely successful MAMaZ Against Malaria (MAM) programme in Zambia, empowering rural communities to combat severe malaria. It is a testament to his passion and professionalism that the MAM pilot recorded a 96% reduction in child mortality from severe malaria.

Simfukwe's loss will be felt deeply by Transaid, but the transport charity is determined to honour his memory and continue his legacy improving road safety and access to healthcare in Zambia and beyond.

SOUTH AFRICA – Jade Da Costa has been appointed as Chief Commercial Officer at Aero Africa. He joins Aero Africa from Intraspeed Group where he most recently held the position of Group Director.

In his new position as Aero Africa’s CCO, Jade will be based in Johannesburg and responsible for group’s commercial activities and product development within the African continent.

UK – AV Dawson has promoted Charlie Nettle from his previous role as Head of Commercial and Marketing, to the position of Commercial and Marketing Director, taking up a role on the Board.

UK – Huw Merriman MP has been elected as the new Chair of the Transport Select Committee.

DENMARK – Mark Handin will join Maersk Supply Service as Chief Operating Officer on March 1, heading the Vessel Management function. He currently holds the position of Vice President of Operations at Tidewater.

Handin will assume the position of COO, replacing Claus Bachmann, who has taken a position within the Maersk Drilling organisation, as SVP, Head of North Sea Division. As COO, Mark Handin will report to CEO Steen Karstensen and will be a member of the Senior Management Team in Maersk Supply Service.

DENMARK – MARPRO has named Jakob Tørring as its new Recruitment Partner.

GERMANY – Jens Wollmann became Department Head Dachser DIY-Logistics at the start of the year. He is taking over from Ralf Meistes, who founded and grew Dachser DIY-Logistics and headed it for more than 20 years. Meistes retired at the end of 2019.

US – The Offshore Marine Service Association (OMSA) has announced new additions to its Board of Directors for 2020/2021, with Minor Cheramie III, Vice President at L&M BoTruc Rental, named as Chair.

Ashton Laborde, President of Laborde Marine; Garrett Rice, Chief Financial Officer at Master Boat Builders; Caitlin Sause, Vice President, Sause Bros., Ocean Towing; and Karl Senner, President of Karl Senner; have all been named as Directors.

US – Assistant Director of Aviation at Oakland International Airport, Kristi McKenney, has been named Chief Operating Officer at the Port of Oakland.

US – PayCargo President and Chief Executive Officer, The Americas, Lionel van der Walt has been appointed by the Smart Supply Chain Alliance (SSCA) to its Advisory Board. The SSCA is part of the Florida Blockchain Foundation and has a mission to use collective business intelligence to build the infrastructure of the 21st century for the logistics supply chain and create a knowledge-based economy in South Florida.

As part of his role on the Advisory Board, van der Walt will be part of a working group on payment solutions that the SSCA is forming.

WORLDWIDE – Edmund Hughes has stepped down from his role as Head of Air Pollution and Energy Efficiency in the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) Marine Environment Division. Hughes has now set up a consultancy named Green Marine Associates.

Roel Hoenders, previously a Technical Officer at the IMO has been named to take over Hughes’s former role in an acting capacity.

Additionally, the IMO has appointed Ariane Gireud as Director of the Organization’s Conference Division, from 1 February 2020.
