SINGAPORE – The week’s appointments and departures include a cross section from the human resources departments of the freight and logistics sectors. However all announcements are not necessarily good tidings and start with the news that, after a rocky end of 2016 for First Ship Lease Trust, which owns a fleet of vessels across major shipping sub-sectors, the start of 2017 continues in the same vein, with the Trust announcing the resignation of Director and CEO, Alan Hatton. This means Roger Woods, the deputy CEO, who has been in post for only 3 months, has been promoted to CEO in the interim.

According to FSL Trust, Hatton was issued a show cause notice last month inviting him to provide an explanation as to ‘certain matters involving potential misconduct and breach of duties’. The matters in question involve unauthorised disclosure of confidential information to third parties, setting up and providing services for remuneration through Lionwharf in which he was the majority shareholder, and failing to give correct information and giving wrong information to the Board, when the Board inquired into various matters. Hatton’s response to the Order was due at 16.00 on February 2. He tendered his resignation shortly before then.

FSL also says that Hatton had increasingly displayed antagonistic behaviour toward Board Members who he considered were not aligned to him, particularly to the appointment of a CFO and Deputy CEO. In November, Independent Director Simon Davidson resigned over the appointment of a CFO adding that the CEO had not been sufficiently consulted. When the role of CFO became vacant on November 1, 2014, the functions were delegated to the CEO, Financial Controller, and other senior managers.
